it takes 3+ years to unlock 50% of the 360M supply, all tokens from public/ private sale will be unlocked after 1.5 years
https://info.avax.network/

I understand there's good argument for and against vested ico but that's how it is

no, 50% is locked for staking reward.
If you bought at $0.5 the effective market cap is 180M, lower than ALGO and Hashgraph now. They're ghost chain with no real usage like EOS, but AVAX is compatible with EVM so it's not starting from scratch.

Seed investors bought at $0.33, private sale bought at $0.5 (same as public sale)

To be fair it is a difficult situation. Originally they planned to sell 0.97% of their tokens (now it's 10%) because they would rather give them to developers for ecosystem growth than used for speculation. They didn't realize the importance of diverse holders but eventually listened to community feedback.
The max. check limit and vesting period are all used to incentivize long term holding.

This is as good as it gets. You can't be a hyped project without people speculate the shit out of it. Just look at Ethereum, even Vitalik had said that he regretted giving early adopters too many tokens and not enough for long term development.
