>500 interest
>500 taxes
>$400 principal
Let's do the math, shall we?

based on the total principal plus interest I have a 30 year fixed mortgage of $200k that I took out 3 or 4 years ago. The interest rate is 4.25% I think.

Taxes and insurance on a $250k house in my town would be about $120/month, however there are no $250k houses in my town.

taxes and insurance on a $500k house in my town would be about $250/month, and most of the houses in my town are about $500k.

My taxes and insurance are double that, because the house is worth a million dollars. In reality it's worth closer to a million and a quarter, and it would take me about 5 minutes to sell it if I wanted to. I don't want to.

I bought the house originally in 2001 for $100k. If I sold it today I'd walk away with a million cash in my pocket. So yes, I am obviously very dumb with money. No clue what I'm doing at all. When I complain that houses are too expensive, I am advocating for those that didn't have my good fortune to buy a house 20-some years ago and are now probably forever priced out. It's bullshit. And it's a problem. Though it's a problem I have certainly benefitted from.
