While you are right that this series of banknotes (50 had a sunflower, 250 had a lighthouse) had a less personal character than their predecessors (pic related), it doesn't make them any less iconic or patriotic. The snipe is a common bird in Dutch landscape among lots of other birds that call our distinctive landscape home. As you may know, a large portion of Dutch soil is reclaimed land which used to be flooded by sea, which, besides economic power, resulted in large natural reserves and the snipe reminds us of our intricate bond with nature, pride, and our rich culture. These things can not be seen apart from each other. Similar for the sunflower which symbolizes a flourishing economy, harvest, and optimism, and the lighthouse which symbolizes our victory at sea, not only have we reclaimed land and turned it into paradise, we also dominated the world with our fleet for decades. These banknotes are as based as it gets. Even though they were introduced in the 70's and there may have been some marxist ideology involves in removing our heroes faces from our currency, our national pride is unshakable.
