Wouldn't that be a moon mission for gold? Silver could make gains too of course, but if all money has to be backed by gold wouldn't we expect it to outperform silver by 1000x?? What am I missing here?

No, a contract substitution can be used as currency with the metals that are honored are in vaults. As long as you can exchange your contract for the metal at the US treasury as promised, it makes no which difference which medium is used to exchange. This has been legally instituted throughout most of US history.

Are you saying the only way to have constitutional money is for every single man, woman and child to carry around wheelbarrows of metal every day to do commerce?
