If you want any kind of security, buying something beyond the top 30 is a bad idea.

Cryptos sort of come in generations. What's "in", so to speak. There was a time where SIA was new and hot, and while this is good and means there's technical strength behind it and I know there are still lots of SIA meetups going on, it's a rather old project and nobody will really recommend it here. Other things will just be more solid.
While this isn't my recommendations, you can for example be sure that Ether (ETH) will be quite a bit more expensive in 1 year than now.
Sadly, to a large extent, crypto is a lot about who can scream the loudest.
I'd not go for a coin that tries to be a BTC replacement but something that other project require and will build upon.
Stuff like ETH, NEO, ADA amd evem EPS are all serious projects that can't be bad investments. What the biggest gainer is, however, I can't tell.

(If your money through already returns before crypto and getting into crypto before or the GDAX crash would have been bad)
The best entry point into crypto can probably be said to be in August 2015 when BTC was $200.

When did you enter and what was the BTC price P back then?
In other words, what's the factor P/200 that you missed out on?

I asked because I started in July when BTC was $2000, which means I missed out on 10x.
Which isn't as much as I thouht it would be.
