Persecutory delusions are a set of delusional conditions in which the affected persons believe they are being persecuted by a specific individual or individuals, despite a lack of evidence. Specifically, they have been defined as containing two central elements: The individual thinks that harm is occurring, or is going to occur. People who experience delusions of persecutions will often go to great lengths to prove them, unable to discern the faults in their reasoning, and are often unreceptive to attempts from loved ones to talk them out of their false beliefs. While everyone may experience some false beliefs about certain people being "out to get them" at times, for people with persecutory delusions, their beliefs are recurring, spanning weeks or months, and take a serious toll on their lives.

Usually, persecutory delusions spring from misinterpretations or exaggerations of real feelings and experiences.
