If you were a government trying to get a handle on a financial ecosystem that's thus far totally out of your control then setting up exchanges to harvest IDs from people would be a pretty good way of matching assets to individuals.
Which I don't care too much about, I have zero interest in the black economy side of this, Drugs or guns or counterfeit passports etc. so I couldn't give a fuck if the government wants to know I'm buying crypto, or what I'm buying with it. If I'm making gains I'll happily pay my taxes.

Lets say coinbase gets hacked by some chinakike. Now they have a photographic copy of my driver's license/passport/whatever. They couldn't get that shit from even Paypal or Amazon if they wanted to. Is CB or Gem more secure than them?

CEX is asking me for a photo of my ID and Credit card-side-by-side.
Just bizarre; I've uploaded photo ID for passport applications or a car rental before but a photo of my credit card??
