I’ve also wondered about this. I think it is a bunch of things, but can be understood philosophically that as the conditions and forces that act to create a “good life” grow more complex through technology and improvement of systems, we must work harder to come to understand and interact with the world. To be able to competently navigate this society, it helps to understand the mechanisms that help us reach our goals (such as funding retirement, physical fitness/ health, on the proper method for rearing children, etc.) and we have better access to information than we ever have in human history. Additionally, some of the fundamental viewpoints / personal philosophies that give a person an edge in accomplishing their goals conflict with our own, leading to change in how we interact with the world. Composing our world view has become more difficult as we are provided a great deal more information than ever before.

Another thing to consider is the barrier to entry and the increase in competition and the globalization that influences trends in human behavior. The internet is a marvelous thing, basically the modern Library of Alexandria. Now even the lowest common denominator of society has access to the information and strategies that allow for conventional success.
