Between 1870 - 1900, American had no income tax. During that same period we saw an increase in the circulating money supply by 120% (banks making loans), but deflation in consumer goods by 40%.

The caveat is that banks were making loans for productive purposes like building more factories and increasing the supply of goods, therefore lowering prices. If banks had switched to focusing on making loans for consumer spending, like credit cards, mortgages, etc. you would've seen an increase in consumer prices, because you would've had credit creating demand for supply, instead of credit being used to create more supply.

Production and supply is king and is the only way to help the poor and middle-class. If you think handing out welfare checks and increasing other entitlements (putting more demand on supply, without creating more supply) you are dooming your people to a perpetual cycle of increased prices and lower real wages, while destroying what little savings they have in the process.

Traveler here, I did 3 months in Italy for under $10kusd. I'm spending another $2.5k on a month of snowboarding, and when the weather warms up I'm going to do another 9 months in europe, probably for ~$30k, maybe a bit less since I know how to be more thrifty now.

Personally, I do it for the art. Once I've seen all the art, I won't keep traveling.
