It was different, sentiment was absolute garbage because of gox and few expected btc to ever come back, I bought eth at 5$ expecting absolute best case scenario of a 10x return after 5 year hold but would have been happy if I doubled my money. Nobody not even Vitalik and the team thought it would go where it went.

Eth changed everything, after eth everyone started shilling everything as the next moonshot, then came the icos which was that on steroids, even this last crypto winter there was no doubt in the space that crypto would be back and breaking aths, and that it was only a matter of time. You have to remember that before eth smart contracts were barely a thing, there were no dapps, the only thing people were getting hyped about was lightning network.
