>First, I'm going to give you guys a bit of background information so you can better understand and answer the questions I'm going to ask. Skip this part if you aren't interested.

I've been living with my girlfriend and her mother for a month now, and pay $250 per month rent and pretty much split food, gas and insurance with my girlfriend. Total monthly costs out of my pocket are only really around about $500. Around the same time I moved, I got a job as an entry level "pool guy". I make anywhere from $200 - $400 per week, depending on the amount of work we have for the week.

My girlfriend and I decided we should take advantage of our low-cost living situation to try to save up some money and to start a (very) small business. We've done a bit of research as to what to expect and we've come up with what we think are some fairly conservative and realistic goals. After the first 6 months or so after starting a business we'd like to be making at least $1000-$2000 per month (or $500-1000 each per month) working full-time. We live very close to San Jose, California, so there is a lot of potential clients in the area.

>Our problem is we aren't quite sure what sort of business we should start up.

We've already thought of pool service, yard work, hauling, and that type of stuff but those markets seem to be over saturated by the hordes of desperate mexican immigrants who live in the area. We're worried we may not be able to get enough clients (or any at all) if we go those routes due to heavy competition. Our more viable ideas include computer repair (we're both partway though our A+ computer repair cert), elementary/middle/highschool level tutoring, auto detailing, household janitorial/handyman service and perhaps even reselling things from yard sales.

>THE QUESTION: Do any of you have any other viable small business ideas we could work with to meet our goals?
