Technically it should be that any short seller is liable to provide for any dividend. What about brokers that internalized or lent out their shares to a party that cannot pay? It's a lot of money to pay out of pocket for 3 shares per share, even if the price is divided by 4. Computershare will get the first bite, and what's leftover gets put in the DTCC's hands and they go figure it out? What about the massive options and swap positions which also operate on phantom shares. Cash in lieu for a dividend doesn't sound like a loss they can take.
I'd like the schizo take on this.
