Basically all you need to know to start are the "Silver Standard Marks", most common being the Lion Passant sterling hallmark. Take a look at this page in particular, if a piece lacks the proper sterling silver standard hallmarking but has random other stamps move along, silverplate manufacturers back then emulated the superficial appearance of hallmarked sterling but don't be fooled.
