i just kept it on her because that was a staple of the original outfit, and i thought i made enough changes to where i just rolled with blue hair + green eyes + tinfoil hat as the core. i stayed with clothing in white/green (+ her blue hair) for northwest front colors, since i was making a lot of those images at the time, and stuck with it.
i figured she would have been moved out far enough in the sticks and shielded her house to not need the hat, but she kept it out of habit.
