I like Des Moines and Iowa in general, great suburbs, great place to raise kids, affordable, but it's not going to be anything different than what it is - a minor league town in the middle of nowhere. Downtown has no one living in it and it's not walkable at all. It's still perfectly fine if you're ok with a simple suburban life.
