Financial noob here with a question about dividends.

Say you've got 200k invested in an index fund that pays dividends on a quarterly basis. If the fund is up by 4% at the end of the first quarter, does that mean the dividend will be 4% of the 200k (minus fees), or 4% of the 200k divided by four?

Also, is there a difference between a fund that pays in dividends and one that pays in interest? Is one better than the other?
