get a hard foam case like TRIC (no really, they are actually durable, lightweight, better insulating, and much more shock absorbing) instead of the traditional hardcase. You can also get one that's covered with cloth/canvas whatever it is on the outside if you don't want the shitty foam look.
it's tested to survive a staircase fall.

dunno if there's a equivalent for other instruments besides guitars though
