Startups aren't worth it, my man. I'm an SDE II. I've worked at Amazon, another fortune 500 and two startups. The second IPOd months after I joined, so my options are vesting. Landing this arrangement took ungodly amounts of luck.

Startups are just so goddamn demanding. You learn a lot and wear bundles of different hats, but there's this cult like mentality that you should be really close to your coworkers and the startup workload results in meager free time outside the office. It feels very claustrophobic.

After this stint, I'm planning to head somewhere large (like Microsoft or maybe the public sector), to get back a semblance if work-life balance. Maybe that'd be good for you too?

In the end, sometimes it just comes down to what team you're thrown into.
