They still make money on the spread between what you pay them and what price they get from the market makers, and also they sell data about your trades before they fill.
So yeah you're being fucked over by a few pennies per share.
But the shorter answer is they don't make much money off you at all nowadays. Which is why service outages is an issue because they aren't eager to spend more on infrastructure.
