Goldbacks were designed mostly to appeal to those who believe in the worthlessness or at least imminent collapse of local gov't-issued monies (fiat).
Their cost prices the gold content at about 1.8 times spot. If you're looking to stack, there are much better buys. If you like the art and novelty, great. They can also tessellate to enrich a background with genuine gold for a reasonable cost.
