Without doxxing myself too much, I went through an experience like this in another country when it's government collasped. While there's a lot of chaos on TV, for 99% of people it's business as usual. People gravitate towards order and very quickly adapt to the changing circumstances. What you're more likely to find is that people will rush to some other established currency. I hate to say it but in our case it's likely going to be Bitcoin. If not that, maybe a BRICS currency assuming it's gold backed. Hell, fucking Kohl's cash might be the best option.

I don't think it would actually be gold or silver during a transitional period. The reason is that gold and silver are good money. Bad money beats good money. People would rather trade and something that is inherently worthless: When you buy something with fiat money, you are giving away something that has no intrinsic value and you are receiving something valuable in return. Would I really hand over a gram of gold for a bag of groceries? No, I'd rather keep my gold. Plus I can't visualize every shopkeep in America weighing medals on scales. Do we even have enough scales for something like that?
