Focus on portfolio construction first - stocks vs bonds/cash, domestic vs foreign. Consider having at least a portion of your port in low-risk assets (index funds or gov/AAA bonds) so even if you make some bad plays you always have a base you are building up over time. Consider the minimum position size you care about - if you are buying $100 of a medium-risk/reward asset, at 20% gain is $20 which is prettymuch irrelevant. If on the other hand you are buying something that will 0x or 100x (options), maybe $100 is the most you'd want to gamble on something so risky. If you aim to make money by day trading (doubtful but some here will claim it's feasible...) make sure you have a plan for what to do when a trade goes against you.
