I'm autistic and run an engineering consulting business.

The hard part for me is negotiating pay, because it's easy for me to get intimidated. This has been taken advantage of a few times by people who noticed and basically bullied me to work for considerably less (20 cents on the dollar in one instance). I am happy to report that there was never any lethal retaliation.

Over the years it has become more acceptable to do this sort of negotiation largely in writing, which has made the lives of everyone concerned much easier.

However I worry that I am not doing well when it comes to in person negotiation. This includes with employees; I have a hard time employing people to do soldering and prototyping work because they often yell at me.

One time I had a man who said that he should be in charge because he was former military and I was an immigrant. One time I had a kid who destroyed about 2 days of prototyping work after telling me that he already knew how to solder (he didn't) and then called me a racist when I told him that I would pay him for the morning but not hire him on. And so on.


The problem is that I get severely confused when people appear to change their mind on serious things (their beliefs in politics and economics) and at the time I do not realize that they are in fact just saying whatever words they think will get them a better deal.

What can I do?
