Huh so kind of like the tonttu elves we have in our folklore here in Finland (though nowadays often depicted as Santa's elves too). According to lore, they are small bearded beings that watch over property and buildings. They are apparently spirits of the original owners/builders/pioneers of the property and everybody would had to conduct themselves in a respectful and proper manner when in buildings and man made structures lest the tonttu play tricks on or punish people by giving them bad crop season or lighting their house on fire or cause other accidents. But if happy they would be guardians of the property. During the time of reformation the Chruch thought of the tonttu and people who believed in them as Satan's pawns and persecuted people, even burned believers on stakes as witches. Martin Luther informed priests to exorcise tonttu the same way Catholic priests exorcised demons.

Definitely would be great to see some kind of rational explanations from somebody who has experienced Tommy Knockers. Mysterious things like these are always thrilling to think about.
