Total potential loss of an investment is just your initial. Shorts carry infinite (yes, infinite) potential losses because there isn't a limit to the amount that a stock can go up before the contract on the short expires. You're basically correct but this is crucial to understanding what's going on.
Melvin shorted ~98% of the total 140% short sell on GME. If that sounds not right it's because it's not. This behavior is straight up criminal and at this point there isn't any possible scenario in which they don't get liquidated.
