There's a giant consumer Mecca about 20 mins from where I live. 4 lane roads, 2 giant malls, 20 car dealerships, every franchise restaurant in America, dozens of strip malls, gas stations, movie theaters, and zero residential buildings all concentrated within like 10sq miles. I went last night, Saturday at 6pm to a BBQ joint because I got a free birthday meal and my wife and I thought we were fucked because usually everything is packed. There was NO traffic, NO wait at the restaurant, and it appeared every single food place we passed was at less than half capacity. A lot of restaurants, dealerships, and furniture stores were abandoned with tall weeds growing in the parking lots. We stopped at the grocery store to get a cake mix on the way home (slice of cheesecake at the restaurant was $11 so we figured we'd save money making an entire cake) and the store was fucking packed. This would've all been unheard of pre COVID. People are hurting financially and it shows.
