I'm self-employed as a courier, I drive my own car to deliver packages same-day, usually computer parts or medical shipments that can't wait to be shipped overnight by FedEx or UPS.
Two years ago I was delivering a computer part to a bank near Times Square in NYC. Pretty routine, walked in, manager signed for it and walked out. As I was walking out in the foyer, I saw a bank envelope and picked it up; it had 16 crisp 100 dollar bills in it. I looked around...no one. But I walked back in and gave it to the manager, said I found it and he thanked me. Never got my name or anything, but I realized it wasn't mine and better off returning it hopefully to the right owner.
That was on a Friday and Monday my boss (owns the whole company) called me into the office. He asks me if I found $1600 in my delivery on Friday and the way he said it I was shocked...I was really shocked because I didn't tell anyone, not even my wife. And I thought he was going to say something like 'the rightful owner says it was $2600 so you're being investigated for the stolen 1000' or something like that because the boss can be gruff and he didn't sound happy. But then he says, the bank VP called him directly to thank me but I wasn't there...and the boss was all of a sudden happy and couldn't believe it lol. As a bonus, the bank gave me 4 box seats to a New York Jets football game. I'm not a football fan per se, but I got to take my wife and older kids there...they even threw in a free parking pass lol. Plus my boss' wife made a batch of chocolate chip cookies for me.
Boss still slaps me on the back and calls me an honest schlep.
