The truth is literally the opposite. The spanish were best known for their one ounce silver "spanish dollars" also known as "pieces of eight." They may have brought stolen mexican silver back to Spain in bar form, but that was just so they could use it to mint more pieces of eight. Pieces of eight are also the QUINTESSENTIAL pirate booty.
