I'm sure this is a stupid question but...

If I only have 500$ and I wanna buy a stock valued at 1000$, I can buy it correct?, or at least half of a share?. Also, if the value of the stock went up 5% would I still get the 5% increase to the 500$ investment? or only 2.5%/half?
