Because smart contracts interacting with off-chain data will have incomprehensibly dramatic consequences for every day life.

The ability to enforce an agreement or a legal contract instantaneously, in a trustless fashion, through the transfer of any currency or form of value into any other currency or form of value, with instant government knowledge is ... well, that's something like quadrillions of dollars of throughput.

I think people (the elite, anyway) have finally become collectively smart enough to conceptualize value as something arbitrarily abstract, but concrete in the sense that there needs to be "work" or "effort" put into the system.

So, mining and refining gold is no different conceptually to grading a civilizations ability to mine crypto tokens; any country population clever enough to mine these things has proven they have the cultural and technological sophistication necessary to out compete, at least theoretically, their competition.

You could make countries compete to see who can make the most pink paint, or find the shiniest pebbles, it doesn't' really matter. Crypto is the gold of the future.
