Planes have been using rudimentary versions of that kind of thing much longer than any other conveyance. They're also a good gauge of what practical application of autonomous control looks like. Commercial jets can take off, climb to altitude and hold course, descend and land, without pilot input. Why need pilots? Well because that shit isn't perfect, there are several other things you need a human(s) in cockpit to do, and consequences for problems are severe. Boeing is prime example of what happen when thing that's supposed to work doesn't work.
