Spanish, German, Dutch and French taxmen are infinitely more sinister than the IRS.
I've worked with consultants who have to clean up messes with all of them.
The IRS actually knows you can't perfectly file, and they also somewhat anticipate you'll try to pay as little as possible. If they "catch" you paying less than expected, they will give you a chance if it does appear you tried your best and are not trying to bamboozle them.

You're lucky they are slow. They haven't gone after crypto credit card users ... yet. But they will, and they will look at transactions from 5 years ago. P2P will only work for small sums up to 50k euros. After that it quite literally becomes cheaper to just pay 60% and forget it. Also safer.
