Because Jack Bogle was a giga autist who believed 99% of people are idiots who fall for scams and Dunning Kruger themselves into believing they are better traders then they really are. He was especially critical of fund managers who claimed they could beat the market but would not only underperform but also charge out the ass in fees. The guy kept a list of everyone who talked shit and collected receipts when they eventually admitted Jack was right and the market can not be beat in the long term.

VOO is better on a cost basis and the lower fees SPY and VOO are the same ETF.

If you are long then you should look into
VTI - US Total Market
VT - Total World
VXUS - Total International No US stocks
VWO - Emerging Market aka China and Taiwan
Now research these but VT or VTI + VXUS is generally considered fine but you can mix in different amounts of exposure if you want.
Other things to be aware of is VT contain VTI and VTI contains VOO/SPY. Now someone might say QQQ but VOO contains QQQ so don't worry about it unless you have a strong to increase exposure to the NASDAQ.

After that you can take 5-10% of your investing power and fuck with leveraged ETFs or whatever.
