OP, as much as I understand about the "never any praise" problem, take comfort in the fact that at least you're on speaking terms with your parents.

Mine treated me like shit my entire life. My father's behavior has gotten increasingly erratic, and after he nearly got me thrown out of graduate school because of him being a shithead, I quit talking to him. My mother has threatened to cut me out of her will because I refuse to move in with her, sleep on her couch, put up with her incessant belittling, and do her grocery shopping during all these stupid lockdowns for all eternity until she drops dead.

At least you still have a family who gives a shit about you.
