Sorry for your loss anon. Be thankful that you love him and treasure his memory so much. When my parents die, I will feel a little sad and shocked that they're gone, but then a sense of a relief. My last judegement of my father's legacy will be "He was an idiot who screwed up his family by not working and becoming a religious JW looney. I'm glad I no longer have to dread his calls and suffer through the pointless self-indulgent babbling." And as for my mother, let's just say I feel somewhat thankful for some of the discipline, drive and appreciation for intellect and beauty she drilled into me, but the "your mother will die in her sleep tonight" posts don't create even a momentary twinge of worry in me.
You could be like me. You could have parents that you're ashamed of and whose shameful lives cast you in a terrible light to the rest of your extended family.
Be thankful for being related to good people, even if their stories were shorter than most.
