I'd recommend a straight-up double eagle to start, either the liberty head or the st. gaudens. you literally can't go wrong unless it's all banged up to hell. every coin store should have them (maybe not today in clown world, but usually because it's so common and well known).

the coin store should have something called the "red book" which is a bible of U.S. coins. ask to consult the red book as you sit down with the coin. it'll tell you exactly what condition to look for and what areas tend to lose detail the most from handling. IIRC for the st. gaudens you want to pay close attention to lady liberty's tits, the eagle's chest feathers, and a couple other raised spots.
