Ah, no worries mate. Pocket sailboats are excellent for starting, that's how I was introduced. In middle school a family friend went out on weekends to sail around the Chesapeake Bay and we'd tag along occasionally. Anecdotally, the east coast and gulf are way more into sailing than the west coast, which means more access/cheaper prices/more opportunities. A lot of retirees sail and will pay for extra help.

Depends on how much you know beforehand. I think everyone planning to sail privately should take at least a month or two of lessons, but I don't think there's value beyond that unless you plan on getting certified. Learn the safety lessons (and take them seriously, fuckups are expensive), learn the logistics of both working the vessel and being around large groups of other boats (how to use the radio, etc) but once you've got the basics down you're set for most day-to-day use. The nuances only come with experience, which you'll only get by getting on the water more often.
