The whole "trading is an art"-narrative aka discretionary-trading-is-the-way-to-go-thing, market feeling, making years of experience necessary is just another meme in the industry. Do not take that hit! Schwager's stories do not explain in any way why your efforts in algorithmic trading failed. There simply is no connection.

"And that's one of the reasons why I'm still interested in TA and charts" - I can only try, again, to encourage you to get away from TA and look into quantitative trading literature.
