When Volkswagen underwent a short squeeze in 2008, the stock was 12% shorted. GME was over 100% shorted (just stupid). AMC was over 50% shorted.
The firms have to cover their shorts by either buying out the contract, or covering (buying the stock). There is potentially infinite upside, 100% downside, and there will likely e court cases over this.
