It makes sense that the only people who think SPCE is a good play lack even an elementary understanding of orbital mechanics.

It takes approximately 9400m/s of dV (change in velocity) to reach orbit. Orbital speed is approximately 7400m/s. Which means of the power required to reach orbit, 2000m/s-ish of that is spent on gravity losses and air drag. The VAST MAJORITY of the energy required to reach orbit is that "going sideways" part.
