Companies (oil) writes bonds, bonds are a long term loan with fixed returns. They're rated based on the credit of a company. Companies are issued a bunch of different credit, like revolvers, long and short term debt.

These companies start losing money and fail to pay their debts. Bonds are among the first to go. There are derivative products built on these bonds, when they get their credit downgraded because a company isn't paying their agreement the value goes down.

Bonds are pretty nice because they "guarantee" a fixed return, say $100k for a $1m investment, perfect for a hedge fund buying appreciating assets for retirement plans. They're shit because like the '08 crisis, they're among the first payments to slip.
