Good, and I mean really good, pro forex exchanges have tight immediate stops. But when a big event happens like the Swiss national bank pulling the euro peg, or brexit out of nowhere, the stops get obliterated. Why? Because stops are market orders and there is no market. Despite all the stuff you read on here about whales, when a massive risk event takes place there is no volume, there is no spread. Why the fuck are the biggest banks in the world going to throw their money into a big pit with no bids? So, peoples stops are filled hundreds of points away from where they wanted, if at all.
During the SNB debacle they got filled at the bottom, which was a full 30% drop in a major world trading currency.
Everything I just posted applies x9000 to cryptos, the exchanges will go down, there will be probably be no stop. Will they intervened afterwards to save your house, like some of the forex brokers did, but many didn't. No.

Always think about the maximum risk, it is real, and it happens way more often than muh black swan says it will.
