The problem is that most Americans are hopelessly deluded by their spending habits they'd never do in Europe. Few Euros eat out more than a couple of times a week, whereas a lot of Americans eat out almost 3 times a day, 7 days a week. Not to mention overreliance on driving... all the time, even burgers living in the urban core of cities. So many Americans waste money on AC/heaters blasting year round, dishwashers, clothes dryers. In the US so many people can't even visit friends without wasting money. Not to mention huge and pointless McMansions.

If the average American spent like the average Euro, there would be a lot less poverty in the US. I personally learned how to spend less when I came back to the states, but the consumerist culture starts creeping back after a while.
