thats why people dont recommend owning leveraged ETFs when you dont pay attention to the market and just buy then hold for half your lifetime

they are hot potatoes, if you sell early, you can make money (assuming the price went in the direction you expected) if you wait too long, you will start losing, and if you wait too long through a crash, you will lose it all

its using math similar to options, and if its a leveraged etf then it actually is using options, which decays with time
