This but unironically. A property for homesteading with a home for raising a modest family should cost at most $300k. A middle class couple should be able to save up enough for a 20% down payment (in order to get a favorable rate and not pay PMI) in at most 3 years and that's without being very frugal, while paying off the rest of the mortgage in 12 years tops while establishing the homestead. At that point you won't have a monthly payment anymore, thus needing less money overall so you should be able to cover your expenses from income generated from your homestead and by doing odd jobs/part time work with all the skills you've learned
