You just took the REDpill, in order for capitalist nations to continue growing and avoid economic downturns, they have to be imperialists. Also, they couldn't defend themselves because socialists revolutions typically happened in underdeveloped countries. They didn't fail due to an internal contradiction in socialism, but some external force, and never actually achieving advanced socialist economy (one that is predominately socially owned/production is based on use), the exceptions being Catalonia is the USSR for very brief periods.
