It's not about storage you dumb-fucks. It has ALWAYS been about upload/download speeds. Nodes have to be able to reliably upload and download blocks within a ten minute window. the bigger the blocks, the fewer nodes can do this. And this factor is predominantly determined by ISP's and location.

The devs realized that having to do periodic hardforks is a huge security hole and they want to basically force themselves and the community to come up with other solutions first. Private companies have a different mentality compared to an open source project managed by academics and linux autists.
