Its the power of marketing. If you look at humans as a collective mob of people all at once rather than just each as an individual one by one, they're quite easy to brainwash into purchasing things they really don't even need that are way overpriced with relatively minimal effort.

Take Shepard Fairey for example. He saw street graffiti, and realized it was effectively, the same as marketing. He got into postering, and plastered a repetitive images side by side over and over again in different places within NYC, using it as a medium for free speech. His imagery became so recognizable, he capitalized on it and turned it into a clothing line. All that from a little street graffiti. So an organized and well funded marketing campaign is certainly powerful enough into hypnotizing the public into believing a little bit of colored EVA foam, lightweight plastic and mesh fabrics woven into a shoe is worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. No problemo.
