I believe pantheon to be derived from myths given to humanity. In order for humanity to evolve naturally you cannot just imprint information of the how the universe works directly into them, we must come to our own understanding. Thus mythos, did prometheus really bring fire to humanity or is it just a myth to explain how humanity were given intelligence? The christians also believe in Prometheus, they reject that the knowledge was good however and see the knowledge as sin from the snake. In general most religion is just myths encoding humanitys birth by a hyperspecies of beings we can't understand.
