I have a small youtube channel with 10k subscribers, 1,616,791 total views, and 21,163.8 hours of watch time.
One of my videos got picked up by the algorithm and after that it was as simple as keeping a steady upload schedule of a couple videos a week to see consistent growth. Most of my channel growth was within the span of one month, but I stopped uploading videos and my channel died as a result.
So my advice to you is to figure out what is popular right now, do that well enough to attract the algorithm, and continue uploading.
If you fail at first, don't worry about it. Wait until the next fad occurs and try again. Make sure to delete/private all of your older videos to keep your channel consistent.

I was briefly monetized but only made about $300 dollars total because most of my videos included copyrighted music. My friend did similar content but uploaded consistently and made thousands of dollars a month doing Youtube and got over 100k subs, but then he fell into the same pit I did, stopped uploading, and now his videos maybe get 10k views if he's lucky.
